Why is NJSS the most recognized and awarded ASA school in the Northeast?
Because we care!! Our Instructors are dedicated sailors with years of experience, a love for the sport and the desire to share their experience with the students. For nearly thirty years, New Jersey Sailing School has been the premier Sailing School in New Jersey and is still the most ASA awarded School in the northeast. We have received more School of the Year, Outstanding School of the Year and Instructor of the Year awards than any of our competitors.

We take great pride in our personal touches and lasting relationships. We want you to learn and enjoy sailing, not just take lessons. Once you complete our courses, we offer regular sailing opportunities to sail a variety of waters and conditions to perfect your skills. Not only do we have rental boats for your sailing pleasure, we coordinate regular Ocean Sailing trips, Hudson River, Sandy Hook Bay, Long Island Sound, Chesapeake Bay, and BVI trips that you can join in on as an individual or a group.

Our History and Mission
The New Jersey Sailing School & Charter, Inc. (NJSS&C or NJSS) originated back in 1973 as Cape & Caribbean Charters, Ltd. then became one of the American Sailing Association’s (ASA) charter schools as New Jersey Sailing School, Inc., in 1983. With the unfortunate passing of the founder, Mike Landers, in July of 2009, New Jersey Sailing School & Charter, Inc. was formed by Stephen Dinklage to carry on the tradition.

As one of New Jersey Sailing School’s senior and most awarded ASA Instructors, Stephen is dedicated to providing the most professional and complete boating instruction and marine services known to the area. Since its inception, NJSS and the Instructors have accumulated more ASA awards for Outstanding School, School of the Year, and Instructor of the Year than any other northeast school.

The school is located in Point Pleasant/Bricktown on the Metedeconk River with reliable southeast winds that bless its shore front location with a reliable cool breeze. Indeed, while the summer doldrums loom over locations to the north and south, sailors in the schools surrounding areas are unfurling their largest genoas hoping to catch any potential breeze while NJSS is still flying a working jib in the steady sea-breeze.

The NJSS is more than just a sailing school! At NJSS, we believe continuing education is very important in order to become an accomplished sailor. In addition to the popular ASA Certified courses, we offer sailing workshops in the Ocean and Bay aptly called “Sailing Workshops.” These include one-day trips to the ocean or similar large sailing grounds to practice the sailing skills that have been developed during the ASA courses. In effect, each boat is on a mini-bareboat charter, with each student expected to share in the operating and navigating of the vessel. On each trip, a USCG licensed skipper coordinates the operation and offers professional instruction. Task specific Sailing Workshops include night and day navigation and one-way destination cruises up and down the New Jersey coast, professional seminars such as the North U Racing/Cruising seminars, diesel seminar and a seminar on the use and operation of the GPS and Radar. These workshops afford each student an economical avenue to receive additional, big boat experience and to enjoy the freedom, excitement and challenge of blue water sailing along with expanding their navigation and boat systems knowledge.

Local sailing opportunities are also available through the use of the NJSS practice boat fleet of day sailors. Everyone agrees that even after a basic or intermediate course, the opportunity to get that hands-on practice and increased confidence that only comes with experience is vital. For those students that don’t feel ready to take on the responsibility of Skipper just yet, our “Mentor Program” offers sailing opportunities with other experienced sailors that can be done for the learning experience or just as a social sail. All our sailors are encouraged to join with other sailors for their practice sessions. This not only reduces the cost of the sail, but it also allows each student to share information that he/she learned with his/her partner.

For those adventurous sailors looking for more than the one-day trips, NJSS also offers extended weekend trips out to Long Island Sound, down to Atlantic City, sailing on the Chesapeake, and don’t miss out on our annual Virgin Island “Learn to Sail” flotilla trip. On all of our trips, we provide professional Skippers and Instructors as needed and the experience of our sailors ranges from the non-sailor to experienced skippers.

Off the water education is also offered. The development of several courses and seminars has expanded the scope of our program from Sailing School to a Marine Education Center. NJSS offers seminars on the GPS, Radar, Celestial Navigation, Diesel Engines and comprehensive courses in Coastal Navigation and U.S. Coast Guard Captain Licensure.

The New Jersey Sailing School’s job is not finished with the completion of the course.
